If you have been diagnosed with arrhythmia, -a complication with the speed with which your heart beats- your doctor may recommend a procedure called catheter ablation to spruce up your condition. It is a procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to create small scars in your heart tissue to forestall abnormal electrical signals from moving through your heart.

How is that procedure done?

In this procedure, a thick wire is inserted into your heart through a little puncture within the groin, to destroy small areas of tissue which are prepared to be causing your abnormal heartbeat. The procedure is completed under anesthesia and takes one to 2 hours. Most people do not feel pain during the procedure. you'll sense mild discomfort in your chest. After the ablation is over, your doctor will remove the guide wire and catheters from your chest. Patients are usually discharged the next few days.

Who needs this procedure ?

Not everyone with a heart arrhythmia needs a catheter ablation. It’s usually recommended for people with arrhythmias that can’t be controlled by medication or with certain styles of arrhythmia from the heart’s upper chambers, called the atria. Catheter ablation is additionally sometimes recommended for people with arrhythmia that begins within the lower chambers of the middle, called the ventricles.
